In August 2019 I flew to Kuala Lumpur and after a 2-day stop to visit the city I took a short flight to Kota Kinabalu, the state capital of Sabah, also known as KK. First stop in Sabah was Mount Kinabalu, 4,095.2 m asl, the highest mountain between the Himalayas and New Guinea. It takes 2 days to climb the mountain and you'll need a permit and a guide to reach Low's Peak. For those who are looking for more adventure, Mt Kinabalu has the highest via ferrata in the world, 3,776 m asl, also known as Mountain Torq. After the hike I flew to Sandakan where I got to visit Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center and the Bornean Sunbear Conservation Center. Next stop was the cathedral-like caves of Gomantong and the Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary which hosts a rich biodiversity. From Kinabatangan I then reached Danum Valley, a wonderful and remote area considered to be a paradise for nature lovers. After a short stop in Lahad Datu I moved to Tabin Wildlife Reserve, house for many endangered species such as the Borneo pigmy elephant. Last stop was Mabul Island, or Pulau Mabul, which has a very well organized diving center that offers daily dives to the best diving sites in the Celebes Sea.
