On August 25, 2021, I flew from Milan to Keflavik International Airport. My friends and I were greeted by the stunning eruption of the Fagradalsfjall volcano on the Reykjanes peninsula, which had begun erupting on March 19, 2021. We rented a car and started our round trip around Iceland clockwise.
Endless lava fields, mountains, glaciers, fumaroles and geysers are the island's precious jewels. Iceland has the lowest population density of any European country, making it a perfect place for nature lovers and explorers. There are countless hikes and treks that lead to breathtaking viewpoints. You can hike along the rims of extinct volcanoes, approach massive waterfalls, and kayak among icebergs in glacial lagoons. Iceland is also a popular destination for birdwatchers. You will easily spot the Arctic Tern, Iceland Gull, Raven, Great Skua, Common Snipe, Rock Ptarmigan, Oyster Catcher, Atlantic Puffin, and so on. As for mammals, you can observe the Harbour Seal and Grey Seal in Ytri Tunga and Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and take a whale watching tour in Husavik. |
